Description
The New Amsterdam Symphony Orchestra welcomes back Felipe Tristán for its season opener. The program will begin with Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's elegant Four Characteristic Waltzes. Next on the program will be George Gershwin's ever-popular Rhapsody in Blue, in celebration of its centennial year, with Yan Shen as soloist. The concert will conclude with Johannes Brahms' widely praised Symphony No. 2. BBC Music Magazine noted that this symphony is "on the surface a sunny, serene work. ...Yet, as ever with his music, a darkly elegiac tone is never far away." After its premiere, critic Eduard Hanslick called it an "unqualified success.
