LEAP Artists Live! Film Premiere

Description

Presented by LEAP, join us for the NYC film premiere of a captivating documentary that takes you behind the scenes of LEAP Artists Live!—a unique ensemble of professional teaching artists who create and perform original musicals while empowering the next generation of artists. This film highlights Kathy D. Harrison’s inspiring process in creating Liberty & Justice, a groundbreaking musical that explores themes of equality, resilience, and hope.

More about Liberty & Justice:

Written, produced, and directed by award-winning playwright Kathy D. Harrison, and performed by the musical theater troupe LEAP Artists Live!, this musical takes audiences back to 1911. The story follows Liberty, a southern African-American woman, and Justice, a Caribbean immigrant, as they migrate to New York City in search of better opportunities. Their journey leads them to the White Rose Home for Colored Working Girls in Manhattan's San Juan Hill district, where they build sisterhood with a diverse group of women and become deeply involved in the women’s suffrage movement.

Through compelling narratives, harmonious singing, rhythmic movement, and historical photographic imagery, LEAP Artists Live! brings the powerful stories of Liberty and Justice to life. Featuring professional performing artists with a background in creative youth development, the troupe not only delivers riveting performances but also sparks conversations about historical narratives often absent from school curriculums.

Performed at theater festivals nationwide and brought to NYC schools to inspire young minds, Liberty & Justice is a testament to the transformative power of theater and arts education. Don’t miss this special evening, featuring a screening of the documentary, an engaging talkback with the director and stars, and a post-premiere reception.
