Description
KRYMOVFEST NYC
Presented in partnership with Art Seen Films and Krymov Lab NYC
"Dmitry Krymov is one of the world's finest theatermakers." - The New York Times
A visionary of the Russian theater, Dmitry Krymov defected to the United States after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, settling in New York City. Since then, his works have faced cancellation and defamation in his home country, but haven't lost any theatrical integrity.
During this special one-day festival, New York audiences will have an opportunity to see three distinct plays, directed by Dmitry Krymov, all recorded in HD and presented in a feature film format. The award-winning "Boris," the adaptation "Everyone is Here" and the post-invasion "Fragment" together showcase Krymov's vast range of perspective and an ethos that firmly entrenches him in the ranks of the world's greatest living artists. Krymov himself will discuss his work and answer audience questions following the last feature. Tickets are available for single screenings or the full day's events, including the live Q&A.
FEATURED SCREENINGS:
BORIS
Directed by Dmitry Krymov
Produced by Leonid Roberman
Based on the play "Boris Godunov" by Alexander Pushkin. A metaphor about the fate of Russia, its rulers and eternal values, Dmitry Krymov’s “Boris” subverts its ideas behind the cover of Pushkin’s text to show a direct line of the current governance of Russia with its imperial past, as well as all the myths on which Russian identity now rests. A flying raven, a poet, a folk choir, saints and sinners, living and dead - all come to life in the twilight of the Provision Warehouses of the Moscow Museum in this new interpretation of a classic work by one of the world’s most renowned stage directors.
Featuring Mikhail Filippov, Viktoriya Isakova, Maria Smolnikova and 2021 Golden Mask Award-winner, Timofey Trubuntsev.
EVERYONE IS HERE
Directed by Dmitry Krymov
Production: Moscow Theatre "School of Modern Plays"
Inspired by a 1975 American touring production of Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town” he visited as a young man, Dmitry Krymov’s “Everyone is Here” is a memory piece, a starting point for a flight of imagination and immersion into his own past. Wilder’s “Our Town” is superimposed on the personal memories of Krymov, his biography and events from his family life. The structure of the play gives rise to an interweaving of events, memories, reminiscences, fantasies, associations, dreams - a carefully planned, as if random confusion, which in the finale leads the viewer to a keen awareness of their own life. Nominated for five 2022 Golden Mask Awards, including Best Play and Best Director.
Featuring Alexander Feklistov and a memorable Maria Smolnikova. Captured on film before a live audience from the Moscow Theatre "School of Modern Plays", Russia.
FRAGMENT - screening and Q&A
Directed by Dmitry Krymov
Utilizing the third act motifs of Anton Chekhov’s “Three Sisters” as a jumping off point, Dmitry Krymov’s “Fragment” focuses on Olga (Samanta in this production), the eldest of the three sisters. Like many of Chekhov's heroes who attempt to overcome fate, she is doomed to fail, but it is in the attempt itself that she becomes so close and dear to us. Ultimately, we empathize with and love this very recognizable person who can't adequately protect herself, her love, and her home. This work premiered in Europe in 2023, when Krymov was already living in New York. DMITRY KRYMOV will join the audience for a Q&A after the screening.
