**** (Four Stars, Not Two!)
Well, back to the drawing board (I wrote a quick review but it was erased)....so.... It was my first live attendance. I found it surprisingly warm and unpretentious/stuffy. I was afraid at first I'd doze off at a reading in a large venue, but Mr. Schaeffer and the venue and the sound are excellent, without too much fanfare of bells and whistles (one silly audience participation quiz, which we all enjoyed). The stories were worthwhile, very different in tone. Aimee is more surreal and/or fairy tale'ish and Etgar's a little more accessible in that first person/child's point of view kind of way (esp. the story about the dog.). David Rakoff has charmed me before on the radio, and in person he is warm, sweet and modest and didn't try and do too much. Bernadette Quigley is someone I remember very well from Bloomsday and she's truly outstanding and compelling. The 2nd story really came alive for me, much more so than when I read the collection years ago. Nice to see both of them in person.
