All Write! Education

Our adult literacy program—All Write!—emphasizes that literacy is not only about learning to read but about discovering and writing about the world around us. Free of charge to Adult Literacy classes from around the city, the program is modeled on Selected Shorts and takes advantage of our experience with literature-in-performance to foster a unique learning environment for adults, empowering them with the experience of having their own creative work read aloud on stage, increasing their access to literature and culture and promoting understanding and tolerance among New Yorkers from diverse life experiences.

At the first program, students listen to a specially tailored program of poetry and stories read by well-known actors. The students are then invited to submit creative work of their own, developed over several months in their classes using curriculum materials provided by the All Write! program. At the second performance, the same actors return to read selected students’ work, a deeply moving, joyous and empowering event. Each student receives a book in which his or her work has been published and all teachers participate in professional development workshops led by All Write! staff. In addition, all students receive round-trip Metro cards free of charge to both performances at Symphony Space.
