Internships Symphony Space has internships available in many areas.
The Symphony Space Internship Program offers excellent professional/educational experience and training in the areas of arts administration and production. All interns are individually supervised by department staff and will have regular consultations with our Intern Coordinator. All interns are involved in our day-to-day operations and attend departmental meetings and bi-weekly staff meetings. Additionally, there are career development seminars led by Symphony Space professionals and guests. Interns are invited to attend all Symphony Space events free of charge, subject to availability. College credits may be available. Weekly stipend of $125 will be provided to full-time interns and $62 to part time interns. Housing assistance is not available.- Time: September 2008 to June 2009, 30 hours per week during Symphony Space hours (Tuesday-Friday, 9 am-7 pm). Please note that all summer internships are filled.

Responsibilities:- Performing Arts Department
The Performing Arts department of Symphony Space produces the annual free Wall to Wall music marathon; music programs in our two theatres; The Dance Sampler – a marathon contemporary dance event; the cutting-edge dance series Thalia Dance; theatre programs; and weekly live performances and film screenings for family audiences. The Performing
Arts intern coordinates with artists and technical staff during performances and
is required to work backstage for selected evening and weekend events. Some
day-time office hours are also required (30 hours per week
total).
- Literary
The Literary Interns (2 openings) provide assistance to the producers in all aspects of the literary department programs which include Selected Shorts: A Celebration of the Short Story, a 13 program live reading series; the Thalia Book Club, an eight-program series that brings authors into conversation with the audience about new books and classics, with readings by actors; the Thalia Kids’ Book Club for kids ages 9-12; the Selected Shorts Radio Series, a 52-week series co-produced with WNYC and broadcast on public radio stations nationwide; Selected Shorts on Audiocassette and CD; Selected Shorts on Tour, which brings the series to museums, libraries, theaters and other off-site locations across the country; Bloomsday on Broadway, an annual marathon reading of selections from James Joyce's Ulysses; and two programs produced with the Education Department, Selected Shorts: All Write! and Selected Shorts: What’s the Story? Interns are expected to attend all literary events at Symphony Space: Selected Shorts and the Thalia Book Club take place on Wednesday nights at 7:30pm; Thalia Kids’ Book Club events are on Sunday afternoons at 1pm.
- Artistic Administration
The Artistic Administration Intern works with the founder and Artistic Director of Symphony Space, Isaiah Sheffer. The intern is responsible for assisting Mr. Sheffer with administrative tasks in connection with theatre programs, Thalia Follies, Wall to Wall, Selected Shorts, Bloomsday and other key artistic initiatives.
- Education
The Education Intern assists in the administration of Symphony Space's education programs: The Curriculum Arts Project, an arts education program focusing on the social studies curriculum that serves 6,000 New York City public school students and their teachers annually; and Selected Shorts: All Write!, an adult literacy program modeled on Symphony Space's nationally acclaimed Selected Shorts program, which serves 1,500 New York City adult literacy students and their teachers annually. The Education Intern works closely with the Education Director and Education Associate. The Intern will observe on-site workshops in the schools, at museums and at Symphony Space and will assist in the production of twelve annual concerts for students.
- Marketing & Graphic Design
The Marketing & Graphic Design Intern provides assistance with the implementation of all marketing activities at Symphony Space. The marketing department is responsible for publicizing more than 200 events annually through advertising, brochures, fliers, press releases, special promotions and the website. The Intern works closely with the entire marketing staff making graphic design skills a required asset. The intern regularly join marketing meetings with the Executive Director, Managing Director, publicist, box office, booking staff and key producers from the Symphony Space production departments.
- Development (fundraising)
The Development Interns (2 openings) work on individual and institutional
giving, membership and special events. The internships involve research,
writing, database maintenance (DonorPerfect and ProVenue) and general
administrative duties. May require attendance at evening and weekend events, in
addition to daytime office hours.
- Business Administration
The Business Administration Intern works on the sales and distribution of CDs
from our literature series, Selected Shorts: A Celebration of the Short Story
and the development and marketing of additional Symphony Space-related
merchandise. This position is a great opportunity to learn about the overall
operation on Selected Shorts branding activities involving the publishing
industry, program distribution, and public radio. The intern will work closely
with the Business Manager and assist with general administration.
- Finance
The Finance Intern works closely with the Director of Finance in providing general administrative support and also assisting in the weekly accounts payable. The position is a good opportunity to gain skills in bookkeeping and non-profit administration in general. This internship is part-time – 15 hours per week.
- Theatre Booking/Film
The Theatre Booking/Film Intern works with the Booking Director and Bookings Associate to help Symphony Space achieve its goal of increasing the volume of rentals of the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre and the Leonard Nimoy Thalia. The intern also provides administrative support to the film department. - Production/tech
Intern
This intern is involved in
all areas of technical/production, including stage management, electrics, sound,
and rigging. The intern will work on Symphony Space productions throughout the
year and other shows/events as needed. The intern will also be responsible for
some general administration. The production/tech intern is expected to work
evening and weekend hours.
